WTF "F*** those Mhz"
"EETimes is reporting this morning that IBM and Georiga Tech have demonstrated a 500 GHz Silicon-germanium (SiGe) chip, operating at 4.5 Kelvins. The 'frozen chip' was fabricated by IBM on 200mm wafers, and, at room temperature, the circuits operated at approximately 350 GHz."
Oh ya there is a lot more cool stuff and a lil surprize inside

Game on till Doomsday
"BBC reports that Norway is starting construction on a 'doomsday vault' in the Arctic which is designed to house all known varieties of the world's crops. The vault's purpose is to ensure survival of crop diversity in the event of plant epidemics, nuclear war, natural disasters or climate change; and to offer the world a chance to restart growth of food crops that may have been wiped out. 'More than 100 countries have backed the vault, which will store seeds, packaged in foil, at sub-zero temperatures. ... Norway's Agriculture Minister Terje Riis-Johansen has called the vault a "Noah's Ark on Svalbard."'"

Woot for the P4C800-E Deluxe! she lives again!
Nvidia has revised its product roadmap, due to continued strong demand for AGP-based systems and Intel's ongoing shipments of 865 chipsets, sources at Taiwan motherboard makers indicated. The graphics chip vendor plans to launch the AGP version of its GeForce 7600GS/ GT graphics processing units (GPUs) in the third quarter of 2006, according to the sources.

You "thought" Torrents were a problem.....
The S6026 storage server is designed for back-to-back mounting that provides the processing capability of 56 cores in one cabinet and can store up to 273 terabytes.
CEO Tom Barton said in a news release that the system will provide storage with a smaller footprint at prices as low as $2 per gigabyte. The units themselves start at $26,000.
Barton maintained, however, that many data centers are overpaying for storage capacity and could realize savings through the S6026's scalability and lower power requirements.

"School administrators in Framingham MA have implemented a policy allowing them to not only confiscate cell phones, but also to search through students' cell phone data as part of their anti drug/violence efforts. Students claim that the policy is an invasion of their privacy."

Re: WTF "F*** those Mhz"
Section_Ei8ht writes to tell us CNet is reporting that the FBI is pushing for legislation to allow law enforcement officials free access to networking gear via built in backdoors for eavesdropping. From the article:
"Jim Harper, a policy analyst at the free-market Cato Institute and member of a Homeland Security advisory board, said the proposal would 'have a negative impact on Internet users' privacy. People expect their information to be private unless the government meets certain legal standards,' Harper said. 'Right now the Department of Justice is pushing the wrong way on all this.'"

Re: WTF "F*** those Mhz"
An anonymous reader writes
"A planned terrorist attack on New York City was reportedly foiled by FBI agents who monitored chat rooms frequented by extremists. Lebanese authorities captured an Al Qaeda member who confessed to the plot, and stated that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had pledged financial and other support for the operation. Although the planning for the operation was not far along, according to U.S. officials, they had already been monitoring the plot for a year."
From the article:
"A government official with knowledge of the investigation said the alleged plot did focus on New York's transport system, but did not target the Holland Tunnel. New York senator Charles Schumer said: 'This is one instance where intelligence was on top of its game and discovered the plot when it was just in the talking phase.' The Holland Tunnel is protected not just by bedrock, but also by concrete and cast-iron steel. One counter-terrorism source told the Daily News it was doubtful a plot to blow it up would be feasible, saying huge amounts of explosives and a detailed knowledge of blast effect would be necessary."
