overclocked questions

i have run into a bit of an issue. i've tried figuring out how to overclock my system in hopes of squeezing as much life out of it as possible untill i can come up with the money for the homebuilt i'm looking forward to working on. the problem is that although i've been able to do a nice job on the graphics card, i haven't even been able to touch the processor at all. so is there anyone out there who can lend a hand? and in case it helps, here's the specs on my current rig: (i wont blame you if you laugh, lol)

dell dimension 2400 (bought in oct. 2004)

2.4 ghz intel celeron processor w/ 333 mhz fsb
512 mb of DDR SDRAM

i know overclocking the cpu deals with voltage, but i can't seem to touch it with the options they give me in setup, so is it that i'm just looking in the wrong place or am i fighting an uphill battle with two broken legs?

Yep, Dells arent the easiest to OC. The mobos are very limited in options.

yeah, you're right, lol. all it gives me in the cpu part of it is a readout of the current clockspeed and what speed it should run after startup (2 options: normal and compatible which apparently means slower)

guess i'll just have to stick to overclocking my graphics card untill i find a program to it or something, lol

Re: overclocked questions

you can't overclock dells. The only option there is to overclock them (which you should'nt do the mobo's are trash) would be to get a custon clockgen.

Re: overclocked questions

Look into getting an ASUS P5B or preferably a Foxconn MARS Board. The P5B is a tough as nails board, and one of the best OC boards for LGA 775 out. (As long as you don't need SLI, it is a crossfire board)

Should run you about 80-200 dollars, respectively.

As for a proc look for an Intel Core 2 Duo E6550. Perfect balance of price and performance.

Re: overclocked questions

one thing thats REALLY important figure your budget first.

If you are going to have $400 to spend starting with a $200 mobo isant the best bet.

Most of us have pretty good stuff laying around so ask us first.

Re: overclocked questions

lol, ok then will do. now i haven't put the prices together yet on these things because i have yet to get the money for it (sign-in bonus for the air-force) but so far i've got:

asus mobo (may get the one suggested earlier depending on what the other prices are when i start looking but it will definitely have to handle a fair amount of overclocking on both the gpu and cpu)

2 gigs of corsair ddr2 ram (for starters. i know there's ddr3 but last time i checked they didn't make too much of a difference in performance yet)

intel core2 duo e6550

nvidia geforce 8400 graphics card (may have to change that one)

600W power supply

and as for the case, i guess i'll just get a standard black case and make my own designs.

The P5B vanilla is like 80 new, for the OC features and stability it cant be beat.

Sabre: The P5B Deluxe, the P5B's big brother, holds the world's CPU clock speed record.
