new graphics update

recently my step sister decided to go into gaming and asked if her computer was good enough for the games she wanted to play. she didn't want anything major in the way of resolution, just that her games looked good but she did want full detail (i figure 1024x768 would be good since it's a well used rez). anyways, i took a look at her computer and though i didn't open it up here is what i can conclude:

it's running with an intel pentium D @3GHZ and has 2 gb of RAM
the graphics card is a pci-e x16 ATI radeonx300 with 128mb of ram.

since it's obviously a somewhat new computer (at least '06 if not newer) i think it's safe to say that the memory is DDR2. i don't know if it supports crossfire yet but since it's a dell i have my doubts.

so far the most promising candidate is an XFXGeForce8600GT with 512 mb of ram but i was wondering if anyone had a better suggestion for the money. below is a link to the card:

XFX GEFORCE 8600GT PCIE 512MB DDR2 540M (XFX PVT84JYAJG) | UpgradeNation.com

so, is there a better suggestion out there or what? lol

Re: new graphics update

The ATI 4870 512MYou cant really beat its performance to $ ratio.

IF the 4870 is a little out of your budget you might be able to find a deal on the HD 4850

If your dell has 2 or more PCI-express slots you can run crossfire.

Crossfire does not require any particular chip set or motherboard to run.

You can even run it on an NVIDIA SLI motherboard.

Re: new graphics update

ah, ok. i didn't know if crossfire was like SLI and needed a particular chipset (along with an extra slot) and i took a look at the two cards and while they really are great finds for the money they're just a bit out of our price range, thanks for the referance though and if we still haven't upgraded by the time we can look for cards like that we'll definitely give it a try!

Re: new graphics update

HD4870 rocks my socks <3 it to death
*snuggles with the 4870*
Other option for pretty decent graphics for the cost, HD3870's are at $135-160 USD now
HD3850 is also a great card.
If you dont mind the extra dosh put in I'd say even the 8800GT or 8800GTS

Re: new graphics update

get a 3850 or 4670, both cheap and will do more then she needs for a while.
