Overclocking help (edite:check post #61 please) 27/10/07

hi,

DarthBeavis sent me here and told me "They are world class overclockers"

so i want to ask a question i just built a computer with this specs:

EVGA 680i motherboard
QX6800 with Coolit Freezone Liquid cooling
EVGA 8800 Ultras in SLi
Corsair Dominator pc-6400
2 WD Raptors 150gigs in RAID 0
1 WD Caviar 500gigs for storage
Enermax Galaxy 1000watt PSU
Windows Vista Ultimate

here is a pic of my setup:

so here is the question:

i overclocked my cpu to 3.73 Ghz and it got to 67-70c at full load in orthos and it is stable as a rock, so i tried to overclock it to 4.00 Ghz and it will post but when the windows logo appears i get a BSOD and i (think) i tried everything i can think of like raising the voltages and raising the FSB and lowering the Multi and some other things, so is it my chipset or do i need more than 800Mhz RAM or what?

thanks in advance

Re: Overclocking help

These guys are great I learned a lot from them, not enough though just enough to spark my intrest in overclocking.. Now that my system is stable over 3.7 gigs I want to overclock my gpc... But vista is a Bit@@ I think Iam going to convert back to xp until vista is rock solid...

Re: Overclocking help

First of all nice system, but we may need some more information than that to start all of this off. Btw most of us are very busy so we will get back to you asap but that might be a little bit. I personally would like to see the three most major screens of cpu-z if you can get into windows, or validate it and post it on the site. Cause of the bsod sounds like a heat issuse or a ram issue. I hope its just ram, but unfortunatly it sounds like your system is not capable of dealing with the heat wattage your giving it. If it's a ram issue run your ram(dram) at the slowest possible speed. If it's cooling i advise getting new cooling. We can help you with getting koolance stuff, give you very specific details on how to set it up for best performance, and get you the best w/c imo available. If you want to go third party( ex dd, st,dtek) we can still help but not to the max of our knowledge as those are not used regularly by us. how does that sound?

Re: Overclocking help

Sounds like what you need is a single-stage phase change unit, I am in the process of building mine with V2-V3. I will post pictures of the process and what everything is/ how it works. These units will typically get yur proc in the -35c to -65c range. If thats too complex, you can always go with a water chiller unit, which is essentially the same equipment used in a phase, but to chill the water in your water cooling loop. If these are too extreme for you atm, then water cooling is a good start, but I hate to see that proc above teh -degrees.

Re: Overclocking help

And we can definatly help you with a completly sick w/c machine. And if you are really into w/c we have the ability to cool almost everything in your case(including memory, back of mobo, hdd's,vregs, chipsets, and cards.)

Re: Overclocking help

well phase change wouldn't be too bad , the cost is not that big of a problem but phase change is just alittle extreme for me but how much should i expect my temps would be on a really good wc setup, and theoretically how much can i oc with it too? and put in mind i have a mid tower case

thanks guys for your support

Re: Overclocking help

i noticed the *1 on your cpu validation, and it appears to me that you had to disable all of the other cores on you proc? look at it this way, we got a quad core pumped full of voltage to 3.8 on water with an 800w radiator. I'm pretty sure we can cool everything in you case, and still get your proc to 3.6. But not only that, we can get your cards a good 25% boost at minimum, your ram will chill at about 1200mhz(huge) fsb will be crazy high. all you will need is an rp unit and a 1kw aluminum raditor and you system will be fine. Backburn is cooling his nb, sb, vregs, proc, 6hdds, and 2 7900gtx's and his system runs(and looks) completely amazing.

Re: Overclocking help

Go with what blue recommends or go with Thermochill PA 120.3 rad (known to be teh best performing rad on teh market - at least that is the GENERAL consensus). Now some of my Next Gen bros say the Koolance ones are better . . .can't say that and then a Danger Den bud likes HWLABS stuff over all others so experts can disagree. But MOST people out in the intraweb think Thermochill is the way to go. Either way you will probably only see a MINOR difference in temps either way (maybe 1c). My suggestion is to go ONE vendor and style meaning if you go Koolance then go ALL Koolance. Their stuff is made to work with their stuff. Now you can mix Danger Den and Swiftech and EK . . .All of their stuff is great. I would say go with a 3/8" system. DO NOT go 1/4". The flow change from 1/2" or 3/8" is minimal from what I have heard but 1/4" is supposed to have a greater delta.

What you might consider to use use the CooliT as a waterchiller that you add to a new setup of beefier cooling equipment. Set up whatever new equipment you choose (if you want Koolance the bros here will help otherwise you should go to Danger Den Community Website - Home) and add an additional block. Connect that block to your coolit cpu head. it will help chill the water and improve the effeciency of your loop. If you are going to get another loop tho I REALLY suggest you just have Travis make you a phase change unit as the additional couple hundred bucks will TOTALLY bring u to the next level. I am gonna pick up a QX6850 which I should be able to get <<hopes>> 5 ghz in Hellmouth . . .that is if Travis is talking to me anymore . . .hint. . .return phone calls. . .
